Introduction

The improper handling of household waste products poses a major environmental issue,
leading to the degradation of the local river and the natural surroundings of the
neighbouring households each day. The dumping of waste products by households in the
neighbourhood is causing harm to indigenous trees, grasses, and small animal species.
Each day, I observe the increasing presence of discarded papers, plastics, and hazardous
cans. It becomes apparent that this issue is worsening. People seem increasingly
indifferent and negligent towards the impact of their actions on their health. From my
perspective, the improper handling of household waste products problem within our
community should not solely be attributed to the municipal system. The responsibility for
managing our waste ultimately lies with us, starting right at our own doorsteps.

It is crucial to take steps to reduce the impact of improper handling of household waste
products on the neighbourhood, especially in areas like my neighbourhood Letsogo
Street, a diverse neighbourhood within the Mamelodi East township. The majority of
neighbouring households are occupied by working parents and students, which
contributes to the improper handling of household waste products. These individuals are
constantly busy coming and going from their homes in their vehicles. From what I notice,
it seems they are not particularly concerned about the dogs or cats in the area destroying
their garbage bins or waste receptacles. You can also observe that they have never
engaged in recycling at any point in their entire lifetime. They fail to recognize the damage
caused by their improper disposal of household waste, which could harm grasses and
herbaceous plants.
PART 1: RAISING AWARENESS OF IMPROPER HANDLING OF HOUSEHOLD
WASTE PRODUCTS IN LETSOGO STREET: AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM

My residence is in Letsogo Street, Ext.22, a part of Mamelodi East township located in
the northeast of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. Established by the apartheid regime in
1953, it is a section of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. I lived here a few
years ago, maybe ten years ago. I am becoming more and more conscious of the
environmental issues in my community, some of which stem from inadequate service from
the local government and lack of awareness among nearby residents. While working on
