Diversity in the South African Context
Assignment 1
Awareness-raising Plan & Poster
The Awareness-Raising Plan
Media:
Diversity Magazine
Article of focus:
Violence and oppression faced by sex workers
Overview:
The Awareness-raising plan is a South African magazine that discusses diversity issues in the
country and is published on a monthly basis. The diversity issue we aim to raise awareness on
will be discussed in an article published in the diversity magazine. Our article will be based
on the discrimination that sex-workers in South Africa face, even from those meant to protect
their human rights.
, Objectives:
To raise awareness and knowledge in South African society. We will base our objectives of
the article with the following criteria:
• Authentic
Come from a place of self-healing & restoration for victims of violence and
oppression in the sex industry – as well as including real-lived stories of sex-workers
to create a lasting impact on the readers.
• Purposeful
Our diversity-based magazine is more than just gossip. It is informative and based on
real, current issues faced by many South Africans. Our article will clearly discuss the
mistreatment faced by workers of the sex industry. This article sets out to effect
change and how sex workers are discriminated by majority of society for earning
money to support themselves the best way they can. Our main purpose of this article
is to show readers how sex workers are abused by people meant to protect their
human rights, such as the police force.
• Acknowledgement
The biggest change required is the de-stigmatisation associated with sex workers and
to raise awareness on the issues they face. We want our readers to have new insight
on common situation that occur in prostitution such as rape, abuse, depression,
anxiety and emotional pain. The starting point is acknowledgement and the ability to
open-up and release the shame and other negative stigma associated with individuals
working in the industry.
