Fashion
Set 1
The Fashion Cycle:
“Fashion cycle”- way fashion becomes popular and the declines in popularity.

Fashions are started in 3 ways:
1. Trickle down  Introduced by top designers-often haute countries.
theory EG: Georgie Armani
 Man in the street accepts what designed for the season
2. Trickle across  Celebrity wears a specific look= accepted by masses.
EG: Kim K and contouring
3. Bottom up  Young + low income groups wear new look and higher income
group adopts that look.
EG: Street culture- the hoodie
 Fashions can’t be forced on consumers.
 Timing is wrong= consumers don’t adapt
 Fashion changes= result of consumers’ needs changing

All fashions pass through 5 stages:
1. Introduction  New fashion introduced and is expensive at first.
(Celebrities)  Celebrities shown wearing fashion + reinforces its importance,
acceptability and status.
 Only a few people wearing it.
2. Rise  Fashion becomes increasingly popular as more people buy it.
(People that  Produced at growing numbers.
can afford it at  Mass production starts which results in a decrease in prices which
high prices stimulates more sales.
from designer  Fashion advertised by stores in magazines etc
outlets)
3. Peak  Reached its height of popularity.
(Masses)  Length of this stage depends on how popular it remains with
consumers.
4. Decline  Becomes less popular when consumers are bored and start
looking for something new.
 New fashion begun and interest in old trend is fading.
5. Obsolete  Very few people wearing fashion.
 Garment is “out of fashion”
 Most fashion trends last 1-3 years.

Fashion Terminology:
Silhouette  Refers to the garments overall outline and shape.

illusion.
Style  Refers to specific characteristics that make one product different from
another.

Classics  Timeless styles that are always seen as tasteful
 Simple lines and everyone looks good in it.
 Characteristics: simple, remain popular, considered good taste, worn
over a long period of time, suitable for most people.
Fads  Style that catches on and disappears quickly and accepted by small
(short lifespan) group of people.
 Poorly designed, easily available and extreme.
 Teens mainly accept fads.
 Normally last one season.
Haute Couture  New style created by fashion designers when they create exclusive
(High Fashion) original designs.
 Different to ordinary fashion it is: expensive because of its unique
style, not mass produced, style and ideas differ to existing garments,
becomes fashionable when masses accept it.
Trends  Fashion is not static it is always changing.
 Changes can be drastic (skirts lengths) or mostly subtle (skirts move
from tight to loose fitting).
Contempory fashion trends for young adults:
 Fashion and clothing are an expression of personal style.
 Young adults are moving away from the confines of childhood where
parents make all decisions and start to express independence.
 Peer acceptance and social status are important.
 Teenagers fashion differs to adults.
 Garments are more revealing and adventurous.
