, QUESTION 1

1.1. Describe the concept “selection”. (2)

Selection is the process followed by an Employer, usually the HR team within a company, which chooses
the most suitable candidate which is qualified to fill a position of employment. Thus, Selection is about
deciding on the best candidate to fill a position. This process concerns itself with the best possible fit of a
candidate within a certain position. Employers must take the necessary steps, and do extensive research
about the available position, before appointing a candidate, as to make sure they have the correct and
substantial requirements when selecting a candidate. Should an employer select the wrong candidate for
the position, the result may be that they (the employer) would have to re-advertise the position and re-
interview a select few candidates, which meet the correct requirements for the position. Terminating a
candidate’s employment, because they didn’t meet die correct requirements for the position, may lead to
certain implications with regard to the employment laws. The candidate could report this case to the
CCMA, as an example.

The Selection Process is about the best fit between an available position/ job and the best candidate for
that position. Employers usually follow the same steps of the selection process, which each candidate
undergoes in effort to select the best candidate for the available position. After the candidate has
participated/ completed each step, they (the candidate) can either be rejected or accepted – in which case
they will proceed to the following step/s until appointment has been reached.

The process of Selection is as follows: Conducting the preliminary interviews, reviewing the written
applications (be that the application form and/or their resumes); providing the employment tests, starting
the employment interviews, conducting the reference/ background checks, providing physical/ medical
examinations and finally providing the offer of employment –should their application and selection process
be favorable.

1.2. An interview is one of the steps in the selection process. Describe the concept ‘interview’
and distinguish between structured and unstructured interviews. (7)

An interview is a meeting between a prospective candidate for an available position, and the interviewer/
panel of interviewees. Interviewers (those conducting the interviews) can range from the in-house HR
department of a company, to an outsourced consultant that can conduct the interview. Employers may
also make use of employees to partake in conducting the interview, as to make sure that equality in
employment is present in the selection process.

The interview process consists of the three basic steps which are the preparation for the interview;
conducting the interview with the prospective candidate and closing the interview.

There are also a variety of interview types, such as Focus Groups (groups of candidates being interviewed
