General terms- topic 2 Independence in Africa during 1960s-70s
1. African socialism- belief in sharing economic resources in a traditional African
way
2. Capitalism – foreign investments and strong ties with western countries
3. Democracy – governed by the people
4. One party state – controls government and actively seeks to prevent other
parties from gaining power
5. Pan-Africanism – unity of all Africans regardless of national borders
6. African nationalism – believe Africa must be united to push out colonisers
7. Socialism – based on shared ownership, government-controlled economy
8. Sphere of influence – claim by a powerful state to exercise political\economic
and military control over a foreign country
9. Neo colonialism – continued economic dependence on external economic
forces as in colonial times

1. Authenticity- awareness of African beliefs and practise rather than foreign

2. Zaireanization – nationalization of foreign affairs

Tanzania
1. TANU – Tanganyika African National Union
2. Ujamaa – meaning that neighbourliness was a system where the people of

Angola
1. MPLA- Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola. Communist led group
declared themselves leaders of Angola, lead to civil war. Supported by USSR
2. UNITA- National Union for the Total Independence of Angola. Third black
Angolan movement- the white SA government supports it because it’s against
communists. It also wore down countries near South Africa
3. FNLA- National Liberation Front of Angola. Supported by Zaire’s president-
Mobutu Sese Seko
4. SWAPO – Southwest African Peoples Organisation. SWAPO guerillas fought
against south African troops
5. Uhuru – Swahili word meaning freedom. The achievement of independence
from colonialism
6. Mwalimu – teacher
