Society - a community, nation, or broad grouping of people with common traditions,
values, institutions, and collective activities and interests.
Macroenvironment - the total environment outside the firm, the comprehensive
societal context in which the organization resides.
Society - is the macroenvironment in which businesses operate.
Why is sustainability important to the business and society relationship?
Sustainability benefits consumers as it focuses on the long term. Reputations of
businesses directly effected by sustainability & has large effect on the business’s
success. Sustainability is central to businesses fulfilling their social responsibilities to
society, & this is central to businesses appropriately relating to their stakeholders.

Society as the macro-environment
Conceptualizing the macro environment – includes the total environment outside of
the firm. The macroenvironment is the comprehensive societal context in which
organizations reside.
