TPS3706: Assignment 50

INTRODUCTION

Dear student

This tutorial letter contains the portfolio template to be used to complete Assignment 50 for TPS3706
(Teaching Practice for FET, grades 10–12).

Please read the instructions and guidelines carefully and thoroughly before attempting to complete the
portfolio. The portfolio counts 80% of your final mark for TPS3706.

Your future and your career depend on quality teaching practice and the timely submission of the
portfolio. You must submit the portfolio as soon as you have completed your practical teaching period
of 25 school days. Since this is a non-venue-based examination, you are expected to complete parts of
your portfolio every day. In the interest of quality assessment, the submissions a r e s t a g g e r e d so
that we do not receive them all at once for marking at the end of the year. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
TO ENSURE THAT YOUR PORTFOLIO IS RECEIVED IN GOOD ORDER AND ON TIME. You are
expected to take responsibility for your work, and to follow the guidelines diligently. Remember these are
the very same skills you are expected to instill in your learners. Please be a good role model by displaying
the behaviour you wish to see.

PLEASE NOTE: The school visit is a very important part of your training, as you will receive advice and
support that is invaluable for your preparation as a teacher. The mark you receive for the school visit
does not, however, count towards your marks for this module, as at this stage we cannot yet guarantee that
every student will be visited. If it so happens that you are not visited, your marks will not be affected in any
way.

• Read all the instructions in this booklet and tutorial letters 101
and 102, before starting your teaching practice.

• Tutorial Letter 102 contains all the information you need on
arranging school placement, as well as letters requesting
permission for you to do your teaching practice at your
chosen school.

INSTRUCTIONS

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE STARTING YOUR TEACHING PRACTICE

This is a non-venue-based examination called a portfolio of evidence. It has to be completed daily on
the days you are at school. You should learn as much as possible from your mentor and other teachers
as well as from the learners. During teaching practice (TP), you are expected to comply with all the school
rules and policies (e.g. leave policy, code of conduct). Read this document thoroughly before starting your
TP. For this module, you must do your TP at a high school, in grades 10–12. Students who are completing
their teaching practice at a technical vocation education and training (TVET) college may do their TP at
a TVET college in NCV L2–L4.

It is your responsibility to plan for TP by making arrangements with the school and planning the TP during
the teaching and learning period. Planning to do your TP during the third term may be problematic since
most schools are busy with trial examinations then. Check with the school for the best time to do TP as
soon as you have registered. It is better to carry out your TP earlier in the year, as there are likely to be
more opportunities for you to undertake this practical component of your studies.

This document contains the teaching portfolio template, which must be completed fully and submitted
as one document, with comprehensive evidence of each aspect inserted in the appropriate sections.
PLEASE DO NOT ATTACH ALL EVIDENCE AT THE END OR AS A SEPARATE SECTION (60 pp. max).

This is a structured portfolio, and you must use the portfolio template we provide. All aspects of the
portfolio are compulsory, except where it is indicated that something can be included for additional marks.
You are expected to complete all activities for each aspect of the portfolio as set out in this tutorial letter.

Where applicable, you have to include documentary evidence. Attach the evidence to the appropriate
section in the portfolio. For instance, if you are asked to page from your reflective journal, then do attach
those in the corresponding reflection section.

The portfolio also includes lesson plans that you must complete and present. You can present as
many lessons as you are allowed to by the school, but at least three of those lessons need to
be assessed by your mentor. Your mentor will give you a mark and feedback and will sign the
assessments. You also need to have the assessed lesson plans validated with the official school stamp.

After completing the portfolio, you must sign the declaration form and have it signed by the mentor and
the school principal. This also needs to be stamped with the official school stamp.

If the declaration is not signed and stamped, the portfolio will be invalid.

The portfolio must be completed electronically and submitted online. No hard copy portfolios will be
accepted. The electronic template is available online on myUnisa. All online assignments and online
portfolios must be submitted as PDF documents. No Word documents will be accepted. After
submitting, please confirm that everything was uploaded and that it appears correctly on the MyModules
site. Do not submit any other documents in the portal for the portfolio submission. Make sure all your
information is in the portfolio before submitting it, as no additional information can be added later. Do
not submit the wrong portfolio in the portal meant for another portfolio. If you do this, your
portfolio will not be marked.

Always keep a backup of your portfolio. We have heard all the hard luck stories (some true and some very
innovative inventions) about laptops being stolen from cars/homes/schools etc., and we know all about
load shedding, lack of data, crashed computers, viruses, etc. These things happen, and you should KEEP
BACKUPS ALL THE TIME.

If you add substantial amounts of colourful, interesting, and credible evidence, please reduce the size of
your artefacts to keep them within the maximum size of the documents that can be submitted online.
