Assignment C, Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general
evaluation of the book - you won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one
unit and the contents, but say as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and
why or why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to
this part. You do not need to refer to the class described for part 2 of this assignment.

The course book given to evaluate is an overall brilliant course book to use for advanced
students due to the fact that it progresses from easier activities to the more difficult
activities in a seamless manner. The entire set up of the course book is set up logically and
easy to follow for students as well as for teachers.
There is plenty of activities that ensure that the students are given time to revise and
practice the information that they have learnt and use the prior learnt knowledge
throughout the course book. Personally, the pages are very engaging and colourful, but at
times feels too cluttered with all the images and activities squeezed onto the pages.
However, the information and the layout is appropriate for students of a higher level.
The activities given in the course book balance all four of the skills, however there is very
minimal pronunciation activities. This would be a great addition to the coursebook. This
could easily be incorporated into one of the group discussions that have been planned
already or in the pair work as there is multiple students to assist each other in peer
learning and would make students feel more at ease talking in pairs or in groups as if any
mistake has been made they would feel comfortable in correcting or being corrected.
There is no use of grammar referring pages or vocabulary lists that is provided for students
according to the scope and sequence. There are no references or uses for formal tests in
the unit – so this will have to be put together by the teacher. This would be a helpful
addition for the teachers as it would assist them when compiling exams or further testing.
The texts given in the coursebook are challenging and have no possibility of offending
anyone’s religion or views as it is focused on a problem that is factual and not based off
someone’s opinion. The topic of globalisation affects everyone from every country so is
easily a topic that the diverse group would feel comfortable learning about and
communicating about whilst challenging their current vocabulary with higher end English
