MAUREEN DAVID PST104F/103 1

, YEAR MODULE, PST104F,

ACTIVITY ONE:

 List two advantages of the school timetable.

1] The learners use the timetable to keep track of which books to carry per day, so that they
can take out the unnecessary books to prepare for the next day.

2] Teachers use the timetable to keep track of which classes they need to teach on which
day and at what time to go there.

3] The timetable can be used to keep track of each class in the school. The office can use
this resource to locate teachers and learners at any given time.

 Is the school timetable at the school you are visiting functional? YES

Give two reasons for your answer.

1] The learners are aware at all times what subjects that they have, and I have not come
across a learner who did not have a specific book for the day.

2] The teachers are on the time for their lessons, because they know where they must be.

 Briefly explain a problem you experienced with the class timetable.

During my observation of using the teachers’ timetable, is that it did not include the grade
room number. This was a small problem that I had in which as a first-time teacher it was
difficult locating the appropriate classroom on time. It involved me asking learners’ and
teachers alike for directions until I was familiar with the layout of the premises.

Is there a homework and extra –curricular timetable in the class you observed? NO
If no, give at least three specific reasons why such a timetable can be useful.

1. A visible homework timetable can remind learners and teachers on what homework needs
to be done and corrected.

2. A teacher can use the extra-curricular timetable to schedule on which days to plan after
school tasks and school tournaments.

3. Parents who come to school would be able to see what homework their child needs to do.
The homework timetable is proof of learning taking place.

4. The principal, teachers and learners would be aware of what extra - curricular each class
participates in and on which days. The extra-curricular timetable may also include which
teacher is responsible for it.

ACTIVITY TWO: ATTENDANCE REGISITER

Please insert your attendance register

MAUREEN DAVID PST104F/103 3

, YEAR MODULE, PST104F,

What challenges did you experience when keeping the register?
There were no problems with keeping the register because I was familiar with the
learners.

If you did not experience any challenges, what challenges do you think
student teachers might experience when keeping the class register for any
class?
 Student teachers are not familiar with the learners that come late.
 Student teachers would not recognise all learners by name at a given time.

Observe and ask the teacher how the following matters are dealt with in the
class:

 Absence:
When a child is absent, he or she needs to bring a letter from parent to state
why the child was absent and a medical certificate if the child was absent on a
test day.

 New Admissions:
The new learner needs to come to school with their parents. They bring the
child’s transfer card; the latest result and they need to pay the registration fee.
Parents need to give their contact details and then only the learner will be
added onto the register and then placed in the relevant classroom.

 Withdrawals:
When a parent wants to take early leave for their child, the child in question is
called up to the office with his belongings and is then told to sign the leave
book to say who had taken leave for the child. Only the parents can remove
the child from school.

 Transfers:
When a parent wants to transfer their child from the school, they need to first
check if all textbooks have been handed in and school fees are up to date, if
this is successful then learners are then removed from the school register and
is given a transfer card.
