Assignment C, Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced

Personally, I think the Course book is good and can be used in a lesson. But nothing is
perfect. I will evaluate the book using the checklist provided in unit 10.

The material is clearly structured, more than enough examples are given. The information
flows in a natural way, moving to each phase using the information previously learned. The
materials are appropriately graded and progresses in difficulty in a natural way, not too fast
and not too slow. There is an ample amount of activities, maybe too much. This is not
necessarily a bad thing seeing as some activities can be left out if time is short, in this
case more is better. The book gives more than enough possible answers/outcomes that
might occur in each lesson. This is very positive, especially for a beginner teacher like me.

There are listening activities that integrate sound into the book, this is very helpful for
students that complete their tasks at home or that would like to practise or redo an activity.
I would however like more interactive activities that could be accessed via an internet link.
The book is visually attractive; however, some pages are cluttered with unnecessary
pictures. I also would prefer larger text; this could be accomplished by reducing pictures.
The diagrams are great, but again like the text is too small.

I feel that all four skill areas are well presented, I would like more writing exercises, seeing
as this is an advanced class that contains students wanting to study in English.
Vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation is well represented and equally focuses on all
three. The activities vary and never feels repetitive, they can be easily adapted. I do not
have any problems with the activities and would not recommend any changes.
The texts are appropriate for advanced learners and will be interesting as well, they
contain the right amount of difficult and easy items to grasp. The texts look authentic and
will help those wanting to better their reading and speaking skills. The material is
appropriate, and I cannot find an example that would be offensive or irrelevant.

The book has a lot of activities that can be adapted into tests, but no tests are provided.
The price of the book varies from region to region. I think it can be afforded if the price is
adjusted for electronic versions. Printing a book in full colour with pictures usually costs a
lot. I would search for a more affordable book. The book does have grammar reference
pages and includes vocabulary lists for the students. I would like more grammar reference
pages.

I would use this book to create and conduct lessons. Because it has a lot of activities, it is
easy to use and can keep students with different levels busy. The book will also be helpful
when starting as an English teacher. I would recommend this book to my students, but I
will make alternative suggestions that might be more affordable.

6 Things No One Tells You About Living in the U.S.

BY RUTH MARGOLIS

America is BIG
No really, it is gigantic. It is an odd feeling to be in a car for six hours and get
precisely nowhere—and not because you are stuck in M25 style traffic. It is just
that this country you have moved to is preposterously vast. Real Americans, who
have never known anything different, are not in the least bit intimidated by
having to drive a full day to reach their vacation spot. To give you an idea of
scale, you could travel from one end of the United Kingdom. to the other in
roughly the same time as it takes to traverse Texas.

The climate can be harsh
Even if you have been on holiday in the United States you will not know what to
expect as a year-round resident. I had visited New York City at least five times
before moving here and still had no idea how exhaustingly hot the summers can
get and how the city basically morphs into Winterfell between January and
March. Of course, these seasonal extremes vary across the country, and you
should research your new home’s weather before moving here so you can
fashion your wardrobe—and your lifestyle—appropriately.

No one carries or pays for stuff with change
In Britain, it is normal to lug around a pocket or purse heaving with coins, like a
medieval landlord who is just collected rent. We painstakingly count it out onto
shop counters so we can buy stuff. In the U.S, change is all but worthless. Having
coins about your person is the irritating repercussion of not paying for your
goods on a card. If you plan on dealing in cash, you will want to get yourself a
change jar so you can dump your shrapnel at the end of every day. Do not,
