Assignment C, Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced

Personally, I would like to use this book for an advanced class. I feel that the language items are
presented appropriately and logically for students. The material is clearly structured, and students
will understand how to use the material with other students or individually. The material starts out
as not so difficult and progressively become more difficult once moving on with the material. This
way students will be comfortable understanding and learning how the language will be used. This
course book takes the time to practice, recycle and revise the language taught. The material uses
pair work and individual work activities throughout the material. Later in the lesson the material
also asks for tasks that must be done by the students. Tasks include a listening and reading task
and after that a speaking task. The material also gives so many extra tips to the learners that can
help them further their knowledge. There are extra teaching resources and tips and more
information bubbles on the material to help students understand the concepts and the language.
The material provides enough exercises throughout the material on the same topic, pair work to
individual work and activities already developed in the book.
The book/material also includes all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) throughout
the book on the topic Global Living. The material and texts in the book are appropriate for the level
of English for the students in the class. Basic English and terms are included in the unit and it helps
students to practice fluency. I would say the listening and reading texts are interesting and that it
will sound/look appealing to the students of advanced level. The topic is very diverse and that will
make it easy for students to give their opinions and facts about it. Students are familiar with global
living and can produce an image of the topic in their minds by just hearing or seeing the topic, that
makes it exciting to students that already know something about the topic and can just further
build their knowledge on the topic of Global living.
I do not see any grammar reference pages and vocabulary lists on the material, only vocabulary
and grammar practice pages listed on the bottom of the page on the contents page. The material
in this book seems culturally appropriate as it focus on the bigger picture of a topic and is written
for students over the world. The book is culturally appropriate for all students in my opinion.
I also do not see any tests provided on the material of the book. Which could be better if there
were unit tests to see what the students understands and do not understand. I have also googled
the price of book and seems on the average price of 42.27 pounds (online version) and can differ
from in other countries, I think it will be able to be bought by some students but maybe not all of
them. Try to get a black and white version of the book maybe because colour books can cost more
than books without colour. I would try to see if there is a way to get this book or similar because
the book is in my opinion good and the layout of the material is good in this book.
I am therefor happy with the book but might suggest something cheaper. So that it will be more
affordable to students.

10 Facts About London You Probably Did Not Know

Ahh, London. Mysterious, singular, ageless, and forever changing – once you live here, even for a
short time, it becomes a part of you for life.

One of the great things about being a Londoner is that you are always learning new and interesting
facts about London, from stories about the Tower of London to our black cab drivers’ encyclopaedic
knowledge of the city streets. Alarmingly, many of these facts fly in the face of everything you
thought you knew about the city.

Today is London History Day, so to celebrate we wanted to explore some of the strange, outrageous,
and hilarious facts about London that are, nonetheless, true. Dive into the strange world that we
Londoners inhabit every day.

1) London is the smallest city in England

That is right. The megacity that most of us know as London is called ‘Greater London’, whilst the City
of London itself is a small portion of this sprawling metropolis. It has a population of only 9,123
people, making it the smallest in England.

2)…and it is technically a forest

We have spoken before about how green the capital is. It is hard to grasp unless you have visited,
but the amount of greenery and green space you can enjoy in London is enormous. So much so, in
fact, that the density of trees it has per square mile qualifies it as a forest as per the United Nations
definition.

3) Over half of the London Underground runs above ground

So really it should be called the Overground. Except we already have an Overground. Ah well, I think
I will stick to calling it ‘the tube’.

4) ‘Big Ben’ is not actually called Big Ben

Tourists from all over the world come to stand on Westminster Bridge and take a selfie next to Big
Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Unfortunately, not one of them ever leaves with a picture of it.
This world-famous landmark is named the Elizabeth Tower – Big Ben is the name of the bell that
lives inside. So, you will not snap a photo of Big Ben but if you are lucky you might get to hear it.

5) Rainy London is not very rainy

The capital is known worldwide for being a rainy city. Except for the fact, that it is not true at all.
London sees less rain than Rome, Miami, and Sydney both in terms of volume and number of rainy
days.

6) Most Londoners do not live in London

Walk the streets of London and most of the people around you probably will not be ‘true’
Londoners. The resident population of the city of Greater London is just over 8.5 million people.
However, the city gets over 16 million visitors every year – a staggering number!

7) It has more Indian restaurants than Mumbai
