1. Hostile
Ok class; let’s take a look at the word HOSTILE together. Is there anyone who knows what this means?
(Interact with the class at this point; I’m assuming that no one knows). So, the word hostile means
unfriendly or not liking something. If someone is being hostile towards another person that means that
they do not like that person. Let me ask 2 questions to see if everybody understands.
1. If someone wrote you a hostile letter, would it be a friendly letter? (No)
2. If you were invited to a party, do you think the person inviting you is hostile towards you? (No)
(It may be necessary at this point to re-teach the concept should the questions not be answered correctly, I
am going to assume that everybody did answer correctly)

2. Demonstrations
Our next word is demonstrations. The word demonstration does in fact have different meanings depending
on the situation, but today I want to look at it in the context of the story we will be reading. Does anyone
know the meaning of the word. (I’m assuming they don’t)
Demonstrations mean a public meeting or march protesting against something or expressing views on a
political issue. Let’s look at the 3rd picture on your handouts. You will see a large group of people with signs
marching together because they do not agree with something. They are taking part in a demonstration.
Class, if you agreed with your government and were happy with what they were doing, would you be a part
of a demonstration? (No) Exactly, we wouldn’t feel the need to demonstrate against them because we are
happy.

3. Juggle
This is a really fun word everybody. This word also has different means but once again we will look at the
meaning with how it is used in our story. The word juggle in our story refers to this: (I will take out my
juggling balls and show them, I do not feel that any concept questions would be necessary after this but I
might give 1 or 2 of the students a chance to try it out themselves.)
