,1.1.1 Strategic business planning is a plan that indicates where the organization is going over the medium to long
term and what needs to be done to be successful. It involves drawing up a plan that indicates how an organisation
will compete in order to be successful. Example from the case study: “After 14 successful years in the local property
markets, B Prop property agency is in the process of seizing opportunities in the global landscape.”
1.1.2 Human Resource Management is a management function concerned with hiring, motivating, and maintaining
workforce in an organisation. Human resource management deals with issues related to employees such as hiring,
training, development, compensation, motivation, communication, and administration.
, Example from the case study: “...Then each regional office will appoint two new operational managers (one from
South Africa and one from the region in question)...”
1.1.3 HRD can be defined as all the processes, systems, methods, procedures and programmes an organisation
employs to develop its human resources in order to equip them to contribute towards organisational performance.
Example from the case study: “...Currently B Prop has a fully training centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, where all
new operational managers will undergo an intensive four-week developmental programme”.
1.2 SHRD purpose statement “Ensuring that everyone at B Prop has the right skills and knowledge to operate
efficiently and effectively.” This purpose statement provides a goal or outlook for managing training and development
of the people that make B Prop great. Again, it will enable B Prop to meet its organisational strategic business
purpose of becoming the number one, most agile, international competitor providing a home away from home for
South Africans.
One HRD-based strength B Prop faces: B Prop has a fully training centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, where all
new operational managers will undergo an intensive four-week developmental programme.
One HRD-based weakness B Prop faces: Failed to consider other nationalities in provision of homes, something that
could have helped the organisation to achieve more revenues for growth.
1.3 Learning organisation. Five characteristics of a learning organisation include the following:
Learning organisations study their competitors and other enterprises, both locally and abroad in order to learn
from industry and developments. Example from the case study: “...B Prop realised that the increased
international movements of South Africans all over the globe creates opportunities to help them in their
search for new homes whether they want to rent or buy. B Prop feels that their knowledge about the property
needs of South Africans will put them at an advantage even in countries with different living conditions...”
It mobilises human talent by putting emphasis on learning, and education and training planned for this
purpose. Example from the case study: “...Currently B Prop has a fully training centre in Johannesburg, South
Africa, where all new operational managers will undergo an intensive four-week developmental programme”.
Well-developed core competencies exist that serve as a take-off point for new projects and initiatives.
Example from the case study: “You were promoted to the position of Strategic Human Resource
Development (SHRD) manager in control of this training centre.”
The learning organisation seeks to integrate task and people factors – the needs of people are continuously
identified and strategies developed to align these needs with organisational goals and strategies. Example
from the case study: “...B Prop feels that their knowledge about the property needs of South Africans will put
them at an advantage even in countries with different living conditions...
It learns from experience, uses systematic problem-solving techniques and transfer knowledge quickly and
efficiently throughout the organisation by means of formal training programme which are linked to
