The purpose of this module is to introduce you to the histories that shaped the emergence of community
psychology globally and in South Africa. You will be introduced to the different principles and intervention
models applied in community psychology, and how these are informed by various theories and schools of
community psychology. The module adopts a relational, observational and narrative approach through
which you will have an understanding of current contextual issues in your community and how these
can be attended to through community psychology interventions. This means that you will be expected
to relate with others within your community, make observations and write accounts of what you have
discovered in your community, and relate these to the content of each theme in this study guide. By the
