PRESCRBED BOOK: Please consult your practical teaching prescribed book (see tutorial letter 101)
before attempting to complete this portfolio. In chapter 1 there is an overview of what you can expect
from your practical teaching experience. As we had complaints from schools about the behaviour of some
of our students, we want you to read chapter 2 very carefully so that you are aware of the level of
professional conduct expected of you. In chapter 3 we want to prepare you for the context of diverse
schools and your role in facilitating this in the classroom. Chapter 4 gives you comprehensive guidelines
on lesson preparation and presentation and is an additional resource you can consult in this regard.

As this practical teaching period focusses on co-teaching chapter 5 is probably the most important
chapter to help you prepare for this school experience. Chapter 6 deals with reflective teaching and we
hope you will gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes from it on your journey to become a reflective
practitioner. All matters pertaining to ICT and its uses and inclusion in your teaching practice are dealt
with in chapter 7 and you are advised to try these out in a safe environment during your teaching practice.

When you have to plan assessments first read chapter 8 on assessments. You will also find useful
information on classroom observations n chapter 9.

NOTE: Keep your prescribed book, as you will also be able to consult it when doing practical teaching III
and IV in the coming years.

PLAGIARISM INFORMATION
Plagiarism is considered to be a serious form of academic misconduct and is treated as such by the University of
Johannesburg. Academic honesty and integrity are therefore expected of students in this module. Plagiarism means
that the ideas, writings, works or inventions of others are represented as one’s own. In order to avoid plagiarism, a
scholar MUST acknowledge the author or the source of any information. However, it is not sufficient to acknowledge
the source – if the exact words from the source are used by the scholar, this must be indicated in the text using
quotation marks. It is further incumbent on the scholar to keep accurate records of sources of information and use
referencing techniques to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is considered immoral, unethical and illegal. The University’s
Policy on plagiarism will be uploaded on ULink for you in order to promote the understanding and prevention of
plagiarism. Furthermore, the concept of plagiarism will be discussed in the contact sessions. In the event of
plagiarism, a mark of zero will be given.

STUDENT DECLARATION
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA. COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONAL STUDIES

Should be completed and submitted by ALL STUDENTS

The Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies places specific emphasis on integrity and ethical
behaviour with regard to the preparation of all written work to be submitted for academic evaluation. Although
academic personnel will provide you with information regarding reference techniques as well as ways to avoid
plagiarism, you also have a responsibility to fulfil in this regard. Should you at any time feel unsure about the
requirements, you must consult the lecturer concerned before you submit any written work.

You are guilty of plagiarism when you extract information from a book, article or web page without acknowledging
the source and pretend that it is your own work. In truth, you are stealing someone else’s property. This doesn’t
only apply to cases where you quote verbatim, but also when you present someone else’s work in a somewhat
amended format (paraphrase), or even when you use someone else’s deliberation without the necessary
acknowledgement. You are not allowed to use another student’s previous work. You are furthermore not allowed
to let anyone copy or use your work with the intention of presenting it as his/her own.

Students who are guilty of plagiarism will forfeit all credit for the work concerned. In addition, the matter can also
be referred to the Disciplinary Committee for a ruling to be made. Plagiarism is considered a serious violation of
the University’s regulations and may lead to suspension from the University. For the period that you are a student
at the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies, , the under-mentioned declaration must accompany
all written work to be submitted. No written work will be accepted unless the declaration has been completed and
attached.

information as possible.

1. Describe the school at which you did your practical teaching (location, age, facilities, how
many learners are enrolled at the school, how many teachers teach at the school,
language of learning and teaching, etc.)

The school at which I am doing my practical teaching is located in
Hermanus and has been in operation for roughly 4 years. Prior
to becoming generation schools, the school existed for roughly
30 years. The buildings are relatively new, and the school has
an Astroturf. There are roughly 300 children enrolled at the
school and 50 teaching staff . the age ranges of the children are
from 18 months to 18 years. The language of learning and
teaching is English home language.
2. Describe the classroom in which you did your practical teaching (size, facilities, learning
and teaching support materials, classroom atmosphere, etc.)

The classroom is spacious and comfortably accommodates the

comprises of desks and chairs, most learners set to at a desk.
Each classroom is also equipped with a television Which
educates is used to show PowerPoints, posters and v ideos. Most
pieces of equipment in the classroom are white and this gives a
clean feel to the classroom.
3. Describe the learners you taught during your practical teaching (number per class, degree
of readiness to learn, their home environmental conditions etc.)

The classes have small amounts of learners, learners vary from 15 to 20 in a
classroom with a maximum of 22 per class. Most learners are very eager to
get into the classroom and get started, however they are always one or two
that do not seem eager. Most learners come from a well-off home, however
there are children from all walks of life. There are learners whose parents are
divorced, deceased, learners on a bursary and many more.
4. Describe your mentor/subject/learning area teacher (knowledge, teaching experience,
helpfulness, guidance, etc.).
7

,My mentor is a natural science teacher who has been in the teaching
profession for almost 40 years. Her teaching experience is an
incredible guide to me as a student. My mental is happy to
answer any questions that I have, offer guidance we needed,
and gives critical feedback. I have thoroughly enjoyed spending
time getting to know her.

profession which has many more components to it than we believe. I have
enjoyed putting my skills into practice in the classroom.

6. Did you conduct yourself in terms of the South African Council of Educators Code of
Conduct?

Yes.

OBSERVING EXPERIENCED TEACHERS

by your mentor teacher. This observation requires you to be actively involved in the process.
You need to compile lesson observation reports for 5 (five) observation lessons during your
Teaching Practice period. You may observe more than one teacher in your chosen subject if
