EDMHODR

, QUESTION 1

Educators should approach discipline proactively and constructively.
With this statement in mind, discuss five examples of constructive disciplinary actions that
educators may use to instil discipline in their classrooms.

• Additional work. A constructive form of punishment that may benefit a learner is
additional work. The educator may give the learner additional relevant academic
work.

• Constructive detention. can be a meaningful form of disciplinary action if the time is
used constructively (e.g. cleaning graffiti of desks/walls or studying at school on Friday
afternoons)

• Involvement of parents. Educators inform parents when their children have gone
against the code of conduct. Parents are asked for their permission for further
disciplinary action at school, and they are then expected to follow up in terms of
longer-term discipline in the home environment.

• Counselling. There are times when certain discipline measures are inadequate, and
the behaviour problems of the learner escalate to a point where the learner needs to
be referred to a school counsellor or even an independent counsellor or psychologist.

• Suspension and expulsion. This is used as a last resort when all other options are
exhausted. Suspension is when a learner is removed from the class or school
environment for a relatively short period of time. When they return, they are
expected to catch up any work they have missed, and any further transgressions
normally lead to expulsion, where learners are removed permanently from the
school.
