EDUCATOR AS LEADER, MANAGER AND
ADMINSTRATOR

, QUESTION 1

1.1 Based on your own experience or the experience of Ms Y (if you have not yet been exposed to
large classes), what challenges may arise as a result of 40 learners in your/her class? Name at
least two challenges.

• They cannot get help from the educator to support independent work.
• The educator is unable to cope with the variety of learners and their particular learning needs.
• The educator has difficulty motivating the learners.

1.2. In your own words and by using examples, differentiate between the verbal- and non-verbal
communication strategies that Ms Y intends to use to get her message across to her learners.

Verbal communication can be of two types: face-to-face and by telephone. Face-to-face
communication is affected by visual and vocal elements. Ms Y would focus on tone of voice, speed,
fluency, accent, pronunciation to ensure that learners understand what is being explained during a
lesson.

Non- verbal communication in the form of facial expressions, body movements, physical
appearance, clothing and posture. It is a continuous form of communication which delivers a greater
impact than verbal communication. The different types of non-verbal behaviours are: Haptics,
Objectives, Time, Proxemics, Chronemics, Oculesics and Kinesics. Kinesics involves movement of the
limbs, hands and feet, facial expression and posture. “Thus, her class knew to immediately calm
down when her arms were crossed or keep absolutely quiet when she put her arms on her hips.”
hence Ms Y intends on using Kinesics.

1.3 How would you describe the importance of intercultural communication in a multicultural
classroom environment?

South Africa is considered to be a rainbow nation due to diversity of its people. Therefore, we
cannot expect children within a classroom to all be the same. Some factors to consider that
distinguish learners from each other are home and social life, cultural background, first language,
exceptionalities etc. The educator must understand and accommodate these differences and provide
an environment where every student can flourish and meet their full potential without prejudice or
judgement and incorporate a variety of different teaching styles, methods, strategies and techniques
in order to produce a good learning atmosphere in the classroom. It is the educator’s responsibility
to do away with any form of discrimination (such as homophobia, misogyny and bigotry), labelling,
stereotyping and racism.
