SECTION A
This section of the examination paper is compulsory. This section is worth 20 marks.

QUESTION 1
Read the following excerpt and answer the questions that follow:

Brain-based learning is considered to be the easier way to design effective e -learning courses
on nearly any subject. What is important when following this approach is to understand how the
brain works. Research has shown that the human brain runs on 90 to 120 cycles
called ultradian rhythms, which influence attention, interest, cognition, memory, visual
perception, arousal, performance, moods and behaviour. Thus, it is important to vary
instructional activities and spend no more than 12 to 15 minutes of focused attention on passive
learning to align learning with these cycles (retrieved from
https://www.shiftelearning.com/blog/bid/354359/a-list-of-brain-based-strategies-to-create-effective-
elearning).

In your own words, you are required to:

1.1 Describe learning as depicted by Cairns and Malloch (2011). (4)

1.2 Discuss the four principles of brain-based learning in terms of online learning. (8)

1.3 Explain the approaches identified by Barnhardt and Turner (2013) that can influence the
effectiveness of an e-learning programme in an organisation. (8)

SECTION B

Answer any THREE questions from this section. Each question is worth 20 marks.

QUESTION 1

Read the following statement:

The world of work is rapidly changing, and organisations rely on their employees’ abilities and capacity
to navigate through this omnipresent change. Academics seem to believe that employees who possess
certain characteristics find it easier to adapt to change. In view of this statement, in your own words,
you are required to:

Explain the four specific characteristics of a competent human being necessary for adapting to change.
[20]

QUESTION 2

Read the following excerpt and then answer question 2.1:

Your learning is political; you are skilled at finding unfriendly forces to blame. Was it the economy?
The weather? The in-crowd? The politicians? You respond pro-actively, often with political games
playing and heroic firefighting of your own. When you study systems, your purpose is defensive: to
see what the system is doing and avoid its unpleasant consequences. Your personal visions are
similarly negative: ‘‘I want to get out of this situation’’ or ‘‘I want to be left alone’’ or ‘‘I just don’t want
to be tricked again’’.

2.1 Identify and then discuss orientation towards the world as depicted in this excerpt. (6)

Read the following statement:

2.2 “The economic stagnation South Africa is experiencing is inextricably linked to the failure of the
education system. Education is a robust predictor of labour market outcomes in terms of
employment and earnings, and thus is a key determinant of economic growth” (retrieved from
https://mg.co.za/article/2018-11-23-00-basic-education-is-failing-the-economy/#). Keeping in
mind the impact that education has on the skills and capacity development of the citizens of
South Africa, in your own words, you are required to do the following:

(a) Discuss the suggestions made by Crause and Booysen (2010) in addressing the failure of the
education system in South Africa. (10)

(b) Describe the four core domains of partagogy. (4)

QUESTION 3

Read the following statement:

“Globalisation relies on complex links – global value chains (GVCs) – that connect producers across
multiple countries. These producers often use highly specialised intermediate goods, or “inputs”, produced
by only one distant, overseas supplier. COVID-19 has severely disrupted these links” (World Economic
Forum 2020) (retrieved from https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/05/coronavirus-globalisation-
shakeup-is-inevitable/). In light of this statement, in your own words, you are required to do the following:

3.1 Explain the benefits and costs of globalisation, especially in developing countries. (8)

3.2 Describe the three main components of globalisation as a shift towards a more integrated and
interdependent world economy. (6)

3.3 Discuss global culture as a trend that emerged with dramatic expansion of capitalism and new
transnational political organisation. (6)
[20]

QUESTION 4

Read the following statement and then answer the questions that follow:

“The building blocks of human capacity development are participation opportunities, the potential
productive interactions in which individuals can engage that allow them to contribute to the development
of their nations, communities, and families”. In your own words, you are required to:

4.1 Explain the three important concepts of participation opportunities. (6)

4.2 Describe community of practice. (4)

4.3 Evaluate the importance of reflexivity in the 21st-century world of work. (10)
