Okonkwo's tragedy is not only his inability to adapt to the changing structure of
his village, Umuofia, but also the drastic change as he goes from a man of high
stature and respect to an exiled outcast in his clan. Multiple reasons result to his
downfall.
Okonkwo, is a self-made, well-respected member of the Umuofia clan. He is a
strong man, of honour, valor and dignity. However, his life is dictated by the fear
of becoming like his father, Unoka - lazy , unable to provide for his family and
cowardly. This example shows that ultimately he became exactly like his father -
he is buried in the evil forest like his father, even after all his effort to be
successful
Ikemefuna's death has a detrimental effect on Okonkwo's emotions in "Things Fall
Apart" - he develops a guilt that continues to eat him up. Ikemefuna's death
symbolizes a bad omen in connection to Okonkwo's exile from Umuofia (chapter
13). In this regard, the death of Ikemefuna signals the start of things falling apart.
Ikemefuna's death fractures the father and son relationship between Okonkwo
