, CARL ROGERS 19 PROPOSITIONS

Proposition 01: human experiences at a conscious and unconscious level

According to Grobler, Schenck and Mbedzi (2013:17) there are three important elements to this
proposition

 The experiential world of every person is central, unique and personal.
This means that this experiential world of the person, group, family or community is only
known to them unless they decide to share with the outsider, also this experiential world of
the person, group, family or community, are unique, meaning my experiential world is not
the same as your experiential world even if we can encounter the same problems in our
journey of life my experiences are always unique. Just as no two people are the same.

 This personal world is constantly/ continuously changing.
This component of this proposition tell us that as our experiences change continuously, they
might not be the same during the second or third session, as they were at the first session or
pre-group meeting if your conducting a group session H Grobler SCK 3028 (2011: 01).

 This experiential world can be conscious and unconscious.
As the person, group or family have experiences on a conscious and unconscious level, they
may not even be aware of all their experiences so our duty as facilitators will be to use
communication of our understanding of all the client’s symbolised experiences including
emotions, needs, behaviours, perceptions and self to deal with this symbolised experiences
and also our communication of our understanding of the deeper, hidden messages by
connecting islands, developing themes and communicating the implied messages to deal
with unconscious experiences.

EXAMPLE: A group of parents who their sons use the deadly drug called nyaope might plan
to talk about coping strategies in their next session but when that day come they might
change and want to talk about parenting skills as the facilitator you will need to listen to
them as their experiential world is constantly changing, meaning their needs, perceptions
might have changed as they live in their continuously changing world.
