, Issues of group co-leadership

It is suggested that “two leaders are better than one”, because it allows a greater coverage of the
group, it is even better when the leaders sit opposite each other so that they will be able to view
all the members. By siting across each other it will be easy to monitor members on both sides of
the group (Toseland and Rivas 2012:129). For example: if one group leader had to set the group
to sit as a circle and he sit in the center of a circle, a leader may not be able to view the members
that are sitting behind him, even if he had to be sited along within the circle, he will not be able
to monitor the members on his left and right side easily.

It is indicated by Toseland and Rivas (2009: 123) that “ co-leaders can specialize in attending to
some facets of group behavior over others, for example, co-leaders can take turns focusing on
process and content issues. Some of other most frequently cited benefits of having a co-leader
follow”. They can confer before and after the group sessions in order to learn from each other. It
is important that co-leaders work out their dispute in a decent and a direct manner by doing that,
they will be setting a good example to the group by showing the group how to cope with
interpersonal conflict, therefore it is suggested that if a conflict occur in a group it should be
sorted out in the group.

Advantages of group co-leadership

According to Toseland and Rivas (2012:130-131) co-leadership can be an advantageous because
leaders have a source of support from each other, that can be very helpful to have somebody that
understand how difficult it is to be a leader of the group, for example leaders can share
experiences that they are going through during group interaction. Leaders have a source of
feedback and an opportunity for professional development these means that leaders can share
feedback with each other about their experiences like strengths and weaknesses so that they can
encourage the development of their professional growth. For instance if one the members in a
group may say something that upset the leader, they may discuss it in between them as
professionals on how they can apply immediacy to deal with that stumbling block.

A leader’s objectivity is increased through alternative frames of references; this will help the
leaders to view the group interaction from a different perspective and it will also help the leaders
