, Competency levels and Context of the School / Classroom
ABC is a co-ed primary school that consists of many learners from diverse cultural
backgrounds. The most prominent cultures in this school are the Xhosa and
Afrikaans. ABC learners fall under the middle class socio-economic division and they
have many resources and facilities to assist language learning.
The medium of instructions at ABC is English from preschool – Grade 3 but many of
the teachers at ABC are able to code switch. Code switching allows the teacher to
speak in more than one language in the classroom to allow learners to see the
connection between concepts in their Home Language (HL) as well as the language
they are learning in. Code switching eases the learner’s competence when acquiring
English as a FAL and adds to the Natural Approach to acquiring a FAL. As learners
have already had a few years of learning English, many of the learners in grade 1 are
have acquired the basic skills of reading, writing and comprehending English but are
still developing their abilities. Many parents insist on speaking English to their
children from a young age as they identify English as powerful and economic
imperative in this globalised 21st century as English assists learners in understanding
the diversity of human culture and increases their communicative skills
(Nachiengmai, n.d.).
There are about 30 learners in each class at ABC, with about 2 classes in each
grade in Foundation Phase (FP). The lesson plans below are aimed at Grade 1
learners improving their handwriting skills and the topic of both lessons are grammar.
The classroom is filled with visual aid that is colourful and eye catching for the
learners, adding to learner motivation. For example, there is a word wall with relevant
words for different topics of each a lesson and the entire classroom is labelled with
English, Afrikaans and Xhosa labels so learners begin to become aware of their
surroundings in all languages they are exposed to at school (DBE, 2011).
