1.1 Explain what you understand by Millennial Generation (1)
The Millennial Generation refers to those who were born during the 1980s to 2000s. They are also
known by various names such as the Y Generation, Digital Generation, Echo Boomers ect. They are
also the most populated and diverse generation as well as the first generation to be born and grow up
in a technological era.
1.2 List major characteristics associated with the Millennials and give an example of each. (10)
• Technologically Acquainted/Savvy/Geeks:
Technology such as MP3 players are no longer used that much since our modernized
technology changes each decade and then the earlier technology becomes obsolete.
Example: Millennial students today are constantly interacting online through Google, Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, WhatsApp and Snapchat and they rely on technology
usage in their classrooms. Technology such as Teams and Google Classroom are used in
classrooms today.
• Uses Search Engines to Acquire Information:
Millennials use search engines such as Google or Wikipedia to learn about things or gather
information on something they might not know or understand. Example: Many students in high
school or University will Google a topic that they do not understand to be able to answer
questions about it in their homework/assignment.
• Prefer Working in Teams and to Collaborate with One Another:
Want to work in teams or groups and that they are more willing to share what they have learnt.
Example: Millennials still collaborate with one another via text messages or cell phone
calls/usage. Many group activities were incorporated when Millennials were young and in
primary school.
• Constantly Seek Feedback:
It is essential for them to receive speedy feedback from their educators because they value the
input, advice and mentorship from their educators. Example, students in High School
constantly asks their teachers if they are done with marking tests, activities or essays because
they want to know what they achieved and how to improve their grades, they also want open
recognition and positive praise from their teachers.
• Have a Short Attention Span, They Learn by Inductive Discovery, Trial an Error/Fail method:
Use trial and error learning to absorb information that they do not understand. They also prefer
to study and learn when performing actions kinesthetically. Students also have a short
attention span, for example, how many students sleep during their lessons each day? A lot and
teachers can confirm to that because they need to wake them up, to pay attention to what is
being taught.
