, THE COURSE PLAN

Name of the Teacher Name of the Student Level of the student
Karla Hattingh Alberto Mozo Minguez B1 Intermediate

Syllabus Type:
Multi – Syllabus: Focus on speaking, pronunciation and listening in English.

Course Aims:
By the end of the course, the student will be able to have and understand conversations in
English. The student will be able to speak fluently and with confidence about common
subjects and will have clear pronunciation.

Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)

I have chosen to use the multi-syllabus because this syllabus suits the student’s needs best.
Based on the interview held with Alberto as well as his needs’ analysis this syllabus will
allow him to focus on his vocab as well as productive (speaking) and receptive skills (reading
and listening). Alberto is confident with writing in English, so we won’t be spending a lot of
time on it. This syllabus has been structured in such a manner so that his intrinsic motivation
for learning English is met. By the end of this lesson, he will be able to have a broad
vocabulary (especially on the topics that interests him), be able to have conversations with
confidence, read and be able to listen shows or stories in English. I will have used authentic
materials to make the lessons interactive, interesting and to keep the student motivated and
feeling positive about his improvement.

I have chosen to use the topics: environment, current affairs, technology, and travel since
the student has mentioned in the essay he wrote as to why he would want to learn English.
I believe that students enjoy the lessons a lot more if they have an interest in what is being
taught as well as the topic that is being used to teach the lesson. The student will also be
more motivated and focused to participate during lessons and to do his homework since all
the lessons and the syllabus is built around his specific topics of interests.

The target language I have chosen to teach him is based on the topics of the different
lessons (current affairs, the environment, technology, jobs, and travel). By introducing these
different target vocab during the lessons, the students’ pronunciation, fluency,
understanding and accuracy will improve.

I have chosen to teach the productive skill – speaking and the receptive skill – listening
since that is the areas in which the student wishes to improve. During the duration of the
five hours of English lessons the student will also focus on sub skills - listening for gist,
vocabulary, fluency and speaking phrases.

, During the first lesson the aim will be to see how well the student can communicate. How
good his vocab / pronunciation is and how fast his speech is. The teacher and the student
will have a conversation about the global pandemic and new lexis will be taught to the
student. Feedback will also be provided after each lesson to help the student with his
mistakes and ensure him of the progress he is making. The first lesson will also help to relax
the student and make him comfortable with switching to English.

The second lesson focuses on speaking and listening. The aim here is to improve the
students’ communication, his listening skills (listening for detail and listening for gist). The
student wil be taught new more complex target vocab on the subject – technology. He will
have to complete a worksheet where he need to fill in the missing words. The teacher will
make use of a YouTube video in the warmer to get the student thinking about the topic of
this lesson.

The third hour flows from the second lesson where the skills that will be taught is speaking
fluently. The aim of this lesson is to see if the student can listen, speak, and answer
questions with confidence and comprehension. The teacher and the student will roleplay
having an interview for a job. The teacher will also show a short YouTube video with
excellent tips for an interview. This is a great lesson, especially since the student is looking
for a job in the UK or looking for a promotion in his current job in Italy.

During the fourth lesson the student will improve his reading and listening for gist skills. The
aim of this hour is to improve the receptive skill (listening). The topic of this lesson is
environment (the causes and effects of climate change). The teacher will show visual
representations of the effects of climate change. After that the student will complete two
practical activities where he and the teacher will ask him different types of questions. The
student will also have to complete a fill in worksheet based on the topic of this lesson.

In the fifth lesson the student will focus and review on tenses used in English (past simple
tense). The aim of this lesson is to see if the students’ aims where achieved and to ensure
that the student can now speak in English with confidence. The topic for this session is
traveling. He will watch a short video about people traveling and after that he and the teacher
will ask each other questions.

In conclusion I have based the structure of my lessons on the needs and motivation of the
learner. The topics I have covered is of interest of the student.
