• A word processing application is a
computer program that allows you
to generate text-based and graphic-
based electronic documents.
• You can add animations to a
document in some word processors.
Uses for word processing applications
• Letters, reports, and book manuscripts are examples of text
documents.
• Brochures and posters are examples of documents with text and
visuals.
• Basic desktop publishing (DTP) is using a computer to prepare
publications and create page layouts, such as newspaper columns.
• Creating content for the Internet and saving documents in a manner

• The Fluent User Interface is used in the Microsoft Office 2007 suite
and later editions, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

• This user interface is most commonly found in Microsoft Windows-
based programs.

Some features of the Fluent User Interface are
• A panel that spans the width of the window, right below the title bar, is
known as the ribbon.
• The row of tabs between the title bar and the ribbon is known as the
ribbon tabs.
• Unless you choose a specific object in the document, contextual ribbons
are not shown.
• Each ribbon has been separated into groups.
• The narrow, downward-pointing arrows provide access to drop-down
menus and dialogue boxes.
• Office button.
• Quick Access toolbar.
• Mini toolbar.
File and view options
• To open the file commands menu in Word 2007, select the Office
button.
• These commands are found on the File ribbon tab in Word 2010.
Opening and closing a document
• Select New from the Office button menu to
start a new Word document.
• Click the Office button and select Close
from the menu to close a document.
• To open a saved Word document, go to the
Office button menu and pick Open, then
navigate to the file's folder and double-click
it.
Saving documents and Save as
• The Save As dialogue box appears when you select Save As.
• You specify the filename and the folder where you wish to save the
file in the dialogue box.
