Outer Ear
Pinnn: Captures sound and direct them into the auditory canal and onto the
Timpanic membrane
Middle ear
Outer ear (Auditory canal): Contains wax and fine hairs to prevent any dust
particles or foreign bodies from entering the ear.
Timpanic membrane (ear drum): Coonverts sound waves into vibrations (the
membrane vibrates). Membrane has a large surface area.
Hammer, Anvil and stirrup are known collectively as Ossicles which are irregular
shaped bones.
The Ossicles decrease in size which assists in the amplification of sound.
Inner Ear
Eustachian tube (Connects to nose): Mantains equal pressure on eithe side of the
tympanic membrane which allows the membrane to vibrate freely.
Semi circular canals: Contains Cristae which mantains balance
Vestibule: Consists of Utriculus (Upper part) and Succulus (lower part)
Cochlea:
Organ of Corti: Sensory Hair cells are stimulated an impulse is generated and
sent via Cochlea branch of the Auditory nerve to the cerebrum of the brain to
bring about hearing.
