Teleology Part 4. Chapter 9
Marcus
• 1988, Marcus and his parents were in an elevator. Marcus has been living with them for quite
sometime now.
• Marcus was taught some rules, which was new for him as on the farm they never had rules.
Marcus was not allowed to take sweets from strangers, not to talk to strangers and not to get lifts
from strangers.
• Marcuses parents Mordechai and Gaitro Masuka walked into a room with a mean eating Marula
fruit. The man had been expecting the Masuka’s to come.
• Marcus came to the conclusion that he liked this man. They all walked into this room with a lot of
furniture and Marcus sat on a love-seat in between his parents.
• The grown ups started talking and Marcus couldn’t care to listen, until he heard feminine voices
coming form the other room.
• Marcus got very excited, like there was a surprise coming, before he knew it he sprang up and
ran to the doors to open them.
• In the room he saw, Genie. The Masukas were going to adopt Genie and she was coming to live
with them.
• Marcus was looking at Genie and she was smiling but he noticed that it was no the same smile
like it was on Beaufort, it was like his mothers smile that did not reach her eyes
• The reason for this is that in chapter 5, Justina and Genie had been through a lot and saw a lot of
death that changed them, it took Genies innocence and that is why her smile had changed.

Chapter 10 Eunice (Marcuses
Grandmother)
• Eunice was back at the Masukas home and she had a bad feeling that Genie would be no good.
She was remembering meeting Genie that days that they went to get Markus. She was
remembering that Genies parents got in lied in politics and she did not like that.
• “The Masukas did not do politics”
• She was upset Genie was coming to live with there family and did not understand why their
family.
• Dingani was adamant that the girl was going to be coming to live with them (out of guilts, you will
see later in the novel he was the reason that the soja’s went to raid the farm, and killed Genies
Parents)
• Eunice was thinking how their family was perfect, “ they had a mother, father, daughter, son and a
grandmother to over see their happiness” That all the magazines and books said four was perfect,
even their kitchen table could only hold four.
• Eunice was in the daughters room, Krystle and she was setting down tape to divide the room into
two, Genies side and Krystle’s side
• “For a girl she knew in her bones would be no good”

, Chapter 11. Krystle
• Krystle knew she was not going to like the girl. She knew that Genie came form Beaufort and that
that name sounded like a place where a princes would come from.
• She was picturing Genie as a princes, this lovely and prefect girl that would steal all the spotlight
from her
• Krystle was a few years younger than Genie, and she thought very highly of herself and was a bit
spoiled. She even thought her name Krystle showed people how precious she was.
• Krystle watched how her father and grandmother was fighting about the girl coming to live with
them. She watched as her mother went into a fit on what to buy the girl and Marcus giving his
opinion on what Genie would and would not like.
• Krystle then made a choice to do everything she could to show this girl that she was not
welcomes and that she did not like genie
• Krystle folded her arms, turned her face away and knotweed her lips, to show the girl that she
was NOT wanted
• BUT, the Genie arrived and she saw that Genie was not princess, she had tattered cloths, old
suitcase, two ragged toys and was definitely no princess, immediately Krystle attitude changed
towards Genie.
• She now liked the girl and said, “ You and I will be best friends” and soon enough they were like
sisters. The only one that interrupted Their happiness was Marcus.
• Marcus went to a boarding school, but whenever he was hope all markus wanted to do was play
games with the girls, cops and robbers, cowboy and Indians, knight riser and the bad guys and
so on.
• Krystle did not like that her and Genie always had to be the bad guys and Markus always the
hero. Genie did not mind, she did whatever Marcus asked.
• One night before bed Krystle was complaining how she did not like the games they would play
and Genie said she does not mind as when Marcus comes home he likes to feel important,
Krystle instantly said, “He is NOT important”
• Krystle and genie when to an all girls private school, that used to be only white but now a handful
of Black girls, and the school said that the girls should be honoured. Many of the girls who went
to the school ended up marrying rich and important men.
• Krystle and Genie always had the parties at 6;30 PM. Using Krystles tea set she was given for
Christmas. Markus was invited but like usual he did not attend, he would say he was a secret spy
sent to go spy ont he Soviet’s.
• During tea the girls would pretend to be adults with back stories, this shows how they mimicked
the post colonial world.
• Krystle was happily marries with 9 children, her toys all of which were brought overseas and not
local, this she was proud of. She was married to an architect and she was an internationally
renowned ballerina. They fell in love fast in a whirlwind romance but her husband was always
working but she did not seem to mind.
• Genie was always a single mother with two children, specs and Penelope
• Markus when he did attend was always a bachelor, which he said with pride. He had a lot of cars
and war rich, one of the perks of being an international spy
• That was how it was and it was always going to be, that’s what Krystle thought
• Then there came a time when Genie was 13, a young girl and Krystle was only 10. Their
relationship started to change as Genie now was making new friends, he new best friend was a
girl but the name of Suzanne Da Silva.
