MODULE 1.1 : INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
What is a computer?
A common type of computer is the desktop computer that you usually find in offices,
businesses and school computer labs.
All these computers are multi-purpose and thus can be used as tools to help us complete a
wide variety of tasks better and faster.
They are also electronic devices (operate with batteries).
Hardware and software
We refer to the physical parts of a computer that we can touch and consider as hardware.
To make the computer do something useful, we need to give it very specific instructions.
These instructions are what we know as programs or software.
It is the ability of your computer to run different types of programs.
The Information Processing Cycle
Computers receive input (usually from the keyboard or the mouse, process it) and then
produce some form of output.
We use computers to process data into information
Data are unprocessed items (text, images, sound and video).
Information is the result of processing data and must be useful and meaningful.
