integrated through various learner-centred and teacher-guided activities that promote the acquisition of important life skills and deepen their
understanding of mathematical concepts (DBE, 2011: 14). The main aim is for learners to develop important skills such as problem solving,
reasoning, logical thinking, and cooperative capabilities that will allow them to thrive as confident and independent members of society (DBE, 2011:
16). The CAPS document allocates 7 hours per week to the development of mathematics skills and concepts in Grade R and is the teacher’s
responsibility to ensure that the learning outcomes are achieved for each term through activities of their own choice (DBE, 2011: 6). The following
weekly cycle and lesson plan for term 3 illustrates how the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts that focus on ‘numbers, operations and
relationships’ can be developed through fun activities that incorporate a play-based approach.
