Postmodernism

🎨 Postmodernism reflects a sceptical attitude towards all claims of absolute
truth or grand narratives, instead accepting that the world is filled with
multiple truths of mini-narratives. These multiple truths co-exist but can
also contest one another. Postmodernism holds that meaning is not fixed
and that it is contingent contextual and provisional - there are no
certainties. Postmodernism blurs the boundaries between high and low
art. Postmodernism embraces a hybridity of styles; uses inter-textual
referencing and pastiche. Instead of lamenting the loss of meaning,
postmodernism embraces and celebrates chaos. [dramatic arts glossary

—> Mid-1980s onwards

Inspired by Modernist art and theatre movements (the ‘-isms’)

Came after modernism

A set of characteristics that loosely categorise the aesthetic, attitudes and world
view of the movement

A rebellion against modernism - the modernist movements all claimed to capture
‘the truth’ (or a truth; the ultimate answer to human experience and purpose).
This ‘truth’ is also referred to as the ‘grand truth’
