Introduction
The main aim of this essay is to present a detailed response with subheading
addressing key areas with respect to MNG3701 assignment 2. Firstly, the essay shall
start by presenting an RBV model explaining key resources for MTN such as
intellectual, human resources among others. These resources have been important in
creating competitive advantage to the organisation. The essay shall further explain the
four-corner model majoring on Vodacom as the key competitor of MTN in South Africa.
In addition, the essay shall deliberate on MTN capabilities and how have they
managed to strategically position the company. Lastly, Xiaomi has been chosen as the
cellphone brand in South Africa with a cost leadership strategy through its activities
and positioning.
RBV Analysis
The resource-based view (RBV) is a model for analysing the internal strengths and
weaknesses of the organisation with respect to its resources and linking them to
opportunities in the external environment according to Venter and Botha (2022). It
determines where the organisation can build competitive advantage, superior
performance and customer value. It indicates an assessment of the organisation that
starts with a general internal evaluation to determine its strengths, specifically as
related to the industry in which it operates.
Resources
The value, barriers to duplication, inimitability and rarity of the tangible and intangible
resources of the organisation should be considered argues Si (2021). RBV focuses
attention on an organisation's internal resources as a means of organising processes
and obtaining a competitive advantage. Barney as cited by Wirtz and Lovelock (2021)
stated that for resources to hold potential as sources of sustainable competitive
advantage, they should be valuable, rare, imperfectly imitable and not substitutable.
The resource-based view suggests that organisations must develop unique, firm-
specific core competencies that will allow them to outperform competitors by doing
things differently. Firm-based resources may be tangible or intangible. Tangible
resources include physical assets such as financial resources and human resources
including real estate, raw materials machinery, plant, inventory, brands, patents and
trademarks and cash. Intangible resources may be embedded in organisational
