Past – Xander is eleven years old

• Xander finds his father in the study with a 9mm pistol in his hands. His father wanted
to shoot himself, but put it aside when he saw Xander.
• His father says his name and it feels to Xander that his name becomes part of the
darkness and evil in the room.
Six months later – Xander is twelve
• There is someone at the door. They are looking for his father.
• Men wearing black jeans and T-shirts.
• Doc sent them.
• Xander's father tells him to hide.
• Xander heard his mother scream.
• Someone hits his father - he collapses.
• Xander felt only fear.

The night before Greg drove to Stellenbosch
At the end of January, a year after he was in
matric.
First person narrator
• Greg lives in Sandhurst, Johannesburg
• His parents are rich. They live in a luxury house.
• His house is gloomy and depressing. His father is in
Kgosi Mampuru II prison, C-Max.
• Greg’s brother John committed suicide.
• John's room still looks just like it did before he died.
• John and Greg did a lot of extreme sports together bungee, river rafting, rock
climbing.
• Mexicans believe you die three times:1) when you close your eyes 2) when you

• Greg and his mother have a good relationship.
• Greg's mother has not come to terms with John's death. She admits this to Greg.
• Sometimes when she was alone, she would scream as loud as she could out of

• Eckardt Wilken's social engineering attack against Greg and his family, tore their
family apart and destroyed them.

• All of John's belongings were taken from Lawson College's Memorial Museum - his
photographs, school jacket, autographed rugby ball.
• The day Greg went to collect his things from Lawson College, he talks to Thomas
Lawson: founder of Lawson College and principal because Doc Pienaar is in prison.
• He is like the Godfather. He hopes they can do business together again in the
future, but Greg says "No need."
• In the school hostel Huis Davinci, everyone made fun of him. TJ, Thomas Lawson's
grandson reported Greg to the police. Greg thought they were friends.
• The school's motto: Lux hominum vita (Light is life for mankind) no longer means
anything to Greg.
• Kwanele - became head boy when Greg was suspended – he came to greet Greg
with the secret Lawson College handshake.
• Plank, (Mark Gibbons) greets him too. He will study at
Stellenbosch the following year.
• Greg is going to finish matric with the homeschoolers.
• His father's court case –he and Doc Pienaar are found guilty of
murder and terrorism.
• Greg sees a woman with black hair and a stern mouth on the
gallery in the court. The temptation to exist
Greg sleeps at a B&B in Beaufort West - on his way to Stellenbosch
• Greg buys a BMW 118i sports model just before he goes to Stellenbosch.
• He takes his painting The temptation to exist by Conrad Botes with him to
Stellenbosh.
• A woman at a B&B in Beaufort West recognizes Greg from Die Huisgenoot. She
accuses his father of killing innocent people. She says rich people always get away
with their crimes. She asks if he is going to find the Baker as well.
