, Question 1
1.1 The research owner

The research owner can be defined as an institution that employees’ researchers to
carry on a study over specified period of time (Eaton, 2017). In some instances, as
argued by Stoke (2017), research owners can be part or department of an institutions
hence they have ultimate rights over the publication and use of the research. The first
advantage is research owners have the legal right of ownership against the use and
utilisation of the research. Under property law, the owner of a physical object normally
has unlimited right of disposal over it. If one owns a house, for example, one can
decide who should be allowed to enter it, and they can sell it, lend it out, rent it out
among others. Intellectual property rights (IP rights), on the other hand, provide an
exclusive right to exploit works, inventions, in certain ways.

In the case of researchers employed by a research institution or a company, their
research could be owned by their employer in whole or in part (Benoot, Hannes, &
Bilsen, 2016). This has implications for the employer’s possible use of the research
results without the consent of the employed researcher, as well as for the extent of the
researcher’s right to use the research.

1.2 The researcher

The researcher can be defined as the person undertaking the practical activities of the
research according to Staller (2017). In this sense, researchers benefit the most in the
process of research given that they have to go through all processes for the project to
fulfil its objectives. Therefore, Eaton (2017) states that researchers benefit experience
and first-hand information about the research outcomes as they are the ones who goes
through the details of the project research before it is published to other stakeholders.

1.3 The scholar of the published research project process and results

Scholars have the intellectual property rights of the published research. This means
that, they benefit financial return if the research is being sold and they have the legal
right to sue whoever misuse the research through copying and/ reselling. By virtue of
the right of property, the purchaser of the book is largely free to decide what to do with
the copy (Benoot, Hannes, & Bilsen, 2016). However, they are not allowed to copy it
and upload the copy to the web, even if they have the ownership, as that would
