GROOT TREK

Participants in the GROOT TREK: Dutch-speaking colonists.

Reasons why these people decided to move away from the Cape Colony.

↘ They moved inland because they wanted to create their own Homeland
(wanted to be independent). NOV2019

↘ The wine industry and the economy suffered because of the freeing of
slaves.
↘ Conflict between the Dutch and the Xhosa over land and livestock
↘ The farmers started to leave the Cape Colony in organized groups from
1834.
↘ The groups later became known as Voortrekkers and the movement as the
Great Trek.
↘ Each group had a leader, such as Louis Trichardt, Piet Retief, Hendrik
Potgieter, Gerrit Maritz and Andries Pretorius.

The nomadic farmers travelled with
bullock carts.
Anglican= The Christian church reformed
schools, churches and government institutions in
the Cape Colony under British control.

The Trek Boers were keen to hunt and enjoyed
the freedom of movement. They called it
"trekgees", which means the 'spirit of moving'.
