, QUESTION 1.
Modern organisations need effective and efficient leaders and managers.
Differentiate between the concepts leadership and management and identify three
examples of the application of these concepts at Netcare.
(10 marks, of which 4 marks will be awarded for the differentiation between leadership
and management, 3 marks for examples of the application of leadership and 3 marks for
examples of the application of management at Netcare)
Leadership can be defined as a process by which an individual influences his or her follower
or followers to achieve a common goal.
Management is the systematic coordination of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling
employees to achieve organizational goals. At its core, management involves setting the
overall strategic direction of the organization through formulation of strategies, allocation of
resources, and review of strategic success.
It will suffice if we state that managers deal with complexity in organisations and they
perform the planning, organising, and control functions to attain organisational goals in an
environment characterised by change.
Leaders, on the other hand, need to deal with change, stemming from business
environments characterised by major, ongoing changing factors and variables.
In the context of resource allocation, both leaders and managers are required, but are
emphasised differently.
Leadership, on the one hand, will have a strategic view and focus on the selection of the
right projects to ensure that the organisation’s strategic objectives are attained.
Management, on the other hand, will have a more operational view and focus more on the
processes for managing portfolios, programmes, and projects and on ensuring that the
projects are eventually absorbed into the business.
In essence, leadership is strategic, focused on the vision of the organisation and involves a
strong element of building trust and emotional engagement with followers.
Management, on the other hand, is operational, focused on goal achievement, and more
directive of those that are managed.
