Question 1
1.1 Identify and briefly discuss Ann’s condition
Ann is likely experiencing symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a common
repetitive strain injury affecting individuals who perform repetitive hand and wrist
movements, such as typing. CTS occurs when the median nerve in the wrist becomes
compressed, leading to symptoms like pain, tingling, and numbness in the hand,
primarily in the thumb, index, and middle fingers. This condition can worsen without
proper ergonomics and may require interventions such as wrist braces, ergonomic
adjustments, or, in severe cases, surgery to alleviate the compression on the median
nerve.
1.2 Importance of Workplace Safety and Factors Leading to Accidents
Workplace safety in high-risk sectors like construction is crucial, as it safeguards
employees and enhances overall productivity and morale (Bhandari et al., 2021).
Construction companies, especially, are under growing scrutiny due to increased legal
challenges and high costs related to workplace accidents. These incidents can result
in costly lawsuits, reduced employee morale, and operational delays. As such,
implementing robust safety management practices can mitigate these risks. This
presentation will train construction managers on the main factors leading to workplace
accidents and outline the significance of safety protocols in maintaining a secure work
environment.
Factors Leading to Workplace Accidents
Lack of Proper Training
Training ensures that workers are familiar with operating machinery and handling
hazardous materials. For instance, a crane operator who hasn’t received training on
load limits and weather conditions may inadvertently cause a serious accident by lifting
too much weight during windy weather, endangering lives and equipment. The
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found that insufficient training
leads to more frequent accidents in industries involving heavy machinery (Rahman et
al., 2020). Regular, hands-on training in scenarios that mimic real construction
environments helps workers learn to react safely to unexpected situations.
