Language Through an African Lens
Introduction
Hello, my name is _____________________, and I’m excited to introduce my
assessment for AFL1501, where I'll reflect on my learning journey in this module. In this
portfolio, I'll cover a range of topics, from how my understanding of identity, language,
and cultural values has evolved, to my perspective on the ways African communities
nurture values like Ubuntu. I’ll also dive into a re-assessment of my First Portfolio
activity, sharing how my initial thoughts have changed after studying the module's
concepts. I’ll talk a bit more about myself and show how the course has enriched my
views on language, culture, and society. I'll include a family tree to trace my roots,
showing the lineage of my father’s and mother’s families as far back as I can. Then, I’ll
list terms of address in different South African languages and discuss how these reflect
cultural values and hierarchies.
Afterward, I’ll reflect on an inspiring article about the Black Mambas, an all-female anti-
poaching unit in Limpopo, relating their story to themes of identity, cultural roles, and my
thoughts on conservation. I'll answer questions related to women in traditionally male-
dominated roles, animal symbolism, and how African wildlife connects to my identity.
Finally, I'll share a personal reflection on Thabo Mbeki's speech on African identity,
choosing a paragraph that resonated with me the most and explaining why it touched
me. In my concluding reflection, I’ll delve into what I've learned in AFL1501 about how
language shapes identity and interpersonal connections, and how this module has
reshaped my view on language, Ubuntu, and the depth of African cultural values.
