Introduction

This guide is written according to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) of January 2011. It will

take teachers and learners on a journey through the underworld of hackers, but also through the wonderland of the

young adult novel. Although more serious aspects are addressed, there are also interesting activities and snippets

that will capture the imagination of teenage readers. Reading must also be fun!

The main purpose of the guide is to help learners READ and WATCH, but there is also practice that will sharpen writing

and presentation skills. Some sections (such as the review, information about Greek mythology or the Faust

legend) can be used for listening exercises. These sections are also ideal for testing learners' understanding.

Topics tackled are the composition (parts) of a book, text features, text structures and reading exercises. A short

summary of the book, as well as summaries per chapter will help teachers and learners to gain an overview of the

novel. Extended content questions and answers will unlock the novel. There are also questions for the reader

asking for opinion, rather than giving a resounding answer. Some questions will challenge hungry readers to dig

deeper than just the bare story. Other questions are up to the man and clear, even for Afrikaans first additional

language speakers.

The guide is structured so that readers...

- make aware of the main ideas of the novel - make aware of
supporting ideas

lead to venture predictions
ÿ

ÿ helps to make inferences ÿ forces to

reread certain passages and ÿlook. ÿ help with visualization (the

use of photos, illustrations, diagrams and a video also help with this) lead with notes

ÿ

- helps to look critically at the language and language use - makes
you aware of themes and motives.

A review of the novel is provided, after which readers will also have an opportunity to

evaluate the novel themselves.

There is also information about the book's lure text, research, Faust and Greek mythology.

ÿ ÿ

, 6

The guide also provides notes that will help teachers and learners to master literary aspects such as characterization, the

narrator, conflict, plot and subplot, influence of the environment on the character and more.

This then is the teaching guide in a nutshell.

Enjoy him!

Compilation of a book
These diagrams explain the different parts of a book, with specific reference
to Underworld:

Front and back:

Back and Back:

ÿ ÿ

, 8

Inside the book:

The half title page only gives the title of
the book.

The title page contains the book title,

author and publisher's name.

On the left is the copyright page with
information about the copyright holder,
publisher, date of publication, designer
of the cover and the book itself, ISBN
number, etc. In this case, the publisher

also listed previous books by the author.

On the right is the assignment
page or inscription page. Underworld is

ÿ
dedicated to the author's brother,
ÿ

Neels.

, 9

Some books will have a blank page on
the left. The publishers of
Underworld decided to the

literary prize that the book won, to
mention here. Ondermöld also later won a
second literary prize, the ATKV
Children's Book Award for Gr 8-10.

The right-hand page contains the
epigraph. An epigraph is a quotation from
another novel, poem, play, article, song,
etc. The quote could possibly serve as
Dictionary inspiration for the author, or it indicates
One of Underworld 's epigraphs is a quote the theme of
from "The Hacker's Manifesto". A manifesto is a the book on.

public declaration of one's principles or
intentions. It usually refers to a political point of
view, but can also be about a person's faith or lifestyle.

At the back of the book is a page with
the resignations. These people assisted
the author with his research.

Because much of the information in
Underworld is based on fact, the author
has inserted a section that
differentiates between fact and fiction.

ÿ ÿ

To make the learners think
Captain Abes Cilliers is from the South African Police Service. What parts of
the book do you think he would have helped the author with?

Answer: With aspects around police procedures when children go missing, witness
questioning, collecting clues, as well as computer crimes that are
committed.

, 10

Because young readers
may find hacking attractive, the
author has also provided the law
prohibiting it at the back of the
book. It is not a common trend
to write about a crime
and then the law that forbids it as well
to be published in the same book.

Finally, the author provides a list of
sources he consulted. This
becomes the bibliography
named.

ÿÿ

Format of source references
The book references used by the author have the following format:

• Author's surname and initial(s) •
Year of publication •
Book's title (in italics) • Place of
publication • Publisher

For newspaper and magazine articles, the authors' details, the date of publication,
the article name, and the newspaper or magazine name were also provided.

For web pages, the author's details, the article or document name, and the web page
address are provided. Not all authors were known. It is so indicated.
